When I recolor .wmf files in ppt , a border appears around them. W

We use Windows XP and notice that when you modify clip art or other graphics
saved as .wmf files, a border is applied around the graphic after you hit
apply or save. This doesn't happen in Windows 2000 or earlier Windows.
PowerPoint 2003.

Do you think we need to resave as .bmp files or modify the PPT preferences?

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

We are recoloring the WMFs right in PPT. The .wmfs are simple line drawings
created in Illustrator. When we inport the .wmf file, there is no frame. To
change the color, we right-click, choose edit picture then recolor using the
line color tool. When we save, a frame appears.

This happens only in Windows XP.

Okay, I'll see if I can repro here. I have a feeling it's got to do with the
ability to edito objects within a group -- it's caused an extra frame thing
to be added to many objects, but you may not realize it unless you ungroup
the objects. When you right-click and select edit picture, you should be
prompted with a "do you want to convert to a drawing" option, and you have
to click Yes to be able to recolor things using the line color tool. So,
when you're recoloring, are you selecting specific parts of the WMF, or is
it just selected as a whole? If it's as a whole, then the frame thing I
mentioned is indeed the issue. Ungroup your picture (Draw|Ungroup -- you may
have to do this twice) and you should be able to locate the extraneous
frame.

Until I can look at it for real, try using the "recolor" button on PPT's
Picture toolbar and see if that helps at all. I believe it will.

PowerPoint 2003.

Try ungrouping the WMF. Many of them have a kind of background frame. Once
it's ungrouped, you can delete the frame, select the other bits and group
again.

Yeah, the problem is indeed that extra frame. To recolor, either ungroup
twice (Draw|Ungroup) or right-click and choose Recolor--ungroup once when
prompted, then ungroup (Draw|Ungroup) to delete the frame, or see if the
Picture Toolbar's "recolor" does any better for you.

You can always regroup the objects after ungrouping and deleting the frame.
