when/how personal folders get updated

If you have a personal folder expanded but never use it for a day or two,
does the personal folder still slightly change once Outlook closes? The
reason I ask is that our backups tapes backup files that have changed and
showed a personal folder changing but a user said they did not add or delete
from the personal folder.

Any data file that is open within Outlook (You open Outlook) is shown as
changed in the properties attribute on that file, whether or not any actual
data is changed.

Niether can you incrementally backup an outlook data file

Thanks for the email. I assume if the personal folder was not expanded then
the property attributes on that personal folder would not change?

I take it that a personal folder has to be both mapped and expanded to cause
the property attribute to change? If the personal folder is mapped but the
personal folder is not expanded, would the archive attribute still change?

I believe they do. Expanding the folders or not makes no difference.

It makes no difference, whenever Outlook is opened, any data files that are
connected within Outlook, their file atributes are set to modified - so if
you opened outlook, then immediately shut it down, the file atributes would
show modified and any backup app would kick in

Brian and DL,

OK thank you for the info. I tested this and can confirm that is indeed the
case.
