when doing footnotes, how do I get the quote numbered?

I am doing a mid-term paper and using quotes from others. When doing the
footnotes, the number right after each quote is not showing up. How do I get
each quote numbered? This is very important because my professor will need to
match up each numbered quote with the footnote information on the bottom of
each page.
Help!!!!!

Select the footnote reference (the superscripted number) in the main
body of the document. On the Format menu, click Font. Click the Font
tab. Is the "Hidden" attribute checked? If so, clear it.

No, the "Hidden" attribute is not checked. Please, what else do I need to
check? Thank you.

Is the number formatted in white text? If so, change the color to
"Black" (or "Automatic").

If the above doesn't help: Press Ctrl+A to select the whole document,
then press Alt+Shift to deselect the final paragraph mark, copy the
text, paste into a new document. Does that fix the problem? (See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/CorruptDoc.htm.)

Correction: Print Shift+Left Arrow to deselect the final paragraph
mark.
