What's wrong

Hello everyone

I reformatted my system drive at the beginning of december from my OEM
CD, XP Home French SP2, and did all the Windows updates.

I installed only the programs I needed and wanted (mostly music creation
tools). I also have AVG Internet Security 7.5 installed and it reports to
be up to date.

About two weeks ago I copied (tried to copy) a data CD with Nero Express,
at the end of the image file creation, the PC frooze and the only option
was to press the RESET button. At reboot, a message appeared that said
"NTLDR is missing", so I did a repair install and Windows came back. The
next day, when I turned on the PC, same thing "NTLDR is missing", I did a
repair install, Windows came back. NTLDR disappeared 2 more times in the
next 3 days but those times I booted the XP CD into the "DOS" mode
(recovery console I think) and copied the file NTLDR from my other
computer running the same version of XP and it worked (XP on this one
comes from an upgrade CD but the file was the same size). NTLDR didn't
disappear since then.

After that, Windows updates wouldn't install but after some research,
this issue has been solved.

My question is: what can cause NTLDR to disappear?

Thanks in advance.

Hello again.

Wait this time for an answer before you start a third thread.

I wasn't waiting for an answer, my posts didn't show up on the group after
many... many hours, so I thought those postings didn't work.

When I sometimes post on some other groups, the post shows up after a few
minutes so I'm unused to the speed of this NG.

Dominique,

At the risk of resident "naysayer" Grumpy, I can't find your original
post either. Would you mind repeating it. I'll try to help if I can.

The subject of my original post was "Should I worry", a couple of weeks ago
the file "NTLDR" disappear 4 times in five days on one of my computer and I
wanted to know why.

When my post finally showed up on the group I got a few answers suggesting
that it was a hardware problem and to do some tests. I ran memtest86 and
HDTune as suggested but no errors came out from those tests.

For now, this PC works OK (it is SOMETIMES very slow to boot though) but I
bought Norton Ghost, backed up my system drive in case my HD is bad.

But thanks, I will post again if I have more troubles.

Dominique
