What's the deal with academic software?

E

Ed Cregger

I'm looking for microsoft office 2007 full version, or, at
least excel 2007. Trying to find a real, non academic
version on eBay is really tough, since that seems to be all
that they are selling.

Can a non academic qualified person get this software to run
successfully without flat-out lying to microsoft?

The obstacle is not getting it to run. The obstacle is
proving to the retailer that you are academically affiliated.
For a student, they ask for a FAX of proof of your current
registration at a recognized learning institution. Being
enrolled for a course at a community college is sufficient.
You could also show proof of being an instructor. But once
you get the installation CD, you're home free. At my local
university's evening division, I could buy WinXP Pro bundled
with SQL Server for $15 last Spring.

Well, aren't we all 'students' of life?

Office Home and Student includes Excel, Word, Powerpoint and One-note, and
you don't need to prove anything. It is for "Home" use as well as "Student"
use. The only restriction is that it is not to be used for commercial use.
(i.e. you can't install it at your place of work).

At £99 from PC World - for instance - (full version, not upgrade) it is very
good value, and you can install it on up to three PCs. (Note that it cannot
be used as a qualifying product for future upgrades, and it doesn't include
Outlook).

(Of course, Open Office is also very good and free, but not, in my opinion,
as good as Office 2007).

Sure. You might also go to a local university or college bookstore and buy
it yourself. The income helps the college and the price helps you.......:).
There are a few schools that check for student IDs, but most don't bother. I
have been using an academic version of Office XP Professional for a long
time and am thinking of going to 2007 soon and will go that route again. It
works just like a retail copy and has the same EULA.

If you have children at school, no matter what grade, you qualify for
the academic version.

As a Brit I'd like to thank the Americans for their help in the war
against terror because if they'd not funded the IRA for 30 years, we
wouldn't know how to deal with terrorists.

You're worried about lying to a company that's been found by five
different courts of law in three different countries to be operating
illegally? Incredible.

So, as long as I don't get caught, I can do anything and it
is okay?

I know what you mean, but I inherited a bad case of
scruples. I'm pretty sure it is a genetic anomaly, but I
will cope.

Now where DID I put that anti-scruple salve????

In case your concern is with "lying", I've checked my
Academic Edition of Visual Studio Pro, and it nowhere
identifies it as "Academic", and neither does the
registration window. By implication, once you get the
installation CD, it's treated as the standard product,
and no lying about your academic affiliation is necessary.
If you're worried about lying to Microsoft about multiple
registrations, just don't register it. If you're worried about
the ethics of breaking your promise to abide by the EULA,
that's between you and your conscence, not between
you and Microsoft. Now if your concern is with what it
would tell your daughter about you and your ethics, and
by implication how ethical you want her to be, that may
matter to you and be of more value than the price of a
copy of Office.

I was really trying to ask if I could get it to work properly, once in hand.
That should have been my question, not the one involving "lying". Even I am
not that naive, but I get tired and do not say what I mean sometimes. Thanks
to those that answered my question.

The other fellow accusing all Americans of supporting the IRA should back
off of the picture a bit and realize that if his country had not invaded and
conquered an unwilling country (Ireland), there would have been no IRA,
financed by Americans or not.

Yes, our country has no right to talk with a holier-than-thou attitude,
i.e., Hawaii. This may be hard to grasp, but average Americans have very
little influence over government's decisions. Just like the British citizens
in Britain have very little influence over their government's decisions. <G>

Probably - as long as you have the activation code/product key
that's on the label.

I don't know about Office but when you buy the Academic versions of
Operating systems or Programming tools you just need to prove you
qualify when you buy it not when you install it.

Some academic versions don't have an upgrade path. At least that's the
case for the Micro$oft products.
