I'm looking for something that can be set up to use filters and delete
messages directly from the email server before downloading with the email
program. Something automatic and simple would be wonderful, as the person
needing this isn't very computer literate. Any suggestions or "bewares"
would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I did check the pricelessware 2004 list, but the descriptions didn't
seem to fit the needs exactly, so I was kind of hoping to drawn on some
recommendations based on anybody's experience.

I thank you kindly.

Best one I know of:

http://poptray.crause.co.za/

As the person using it is not particularly comp literate, you'll need
to set it up and teach him/her how to use the filters. It's quite
elemental...you just right click on a particular piece of spam and
choose "add to blacklist." Then check the option to delete spam on
the server.

Hi;
Simplest: Contact the ISP involved.

Some like Sympatico here in Canada have this FREE screening for spam feature
implemented within a "GetEmail" HomePage Tab.
Catches 75-85% except some names and titles and spelling "variators"....but
the ISP database gets constantly
updates when you help it by manually sorting to "SPAM".

Hamster is a free mail server, but you have to be able to set up
filters. Not exactly novice stuff.

Telus does that as well. Although it is ironic that Telus supplies
connectivity to some of the worlds largest spammers, and has a whole
blacklist devoted to its IP addresses, one of which is mine.

I use and like Frontgate MX from http://www.presorium.com it learns to pick
out spam from good emails before it gets to whatever mail program you have.

Which FGMX (www.presorium.com) also can do, also is free, is not in
beta any longer... but is never given a chance here... wonder why!

Dick

Well technically stuff like Frontgate mmx, actually download everything
they are just not sent to the email client.

You can accomplish the same thing with POPfile and k9 merely by making
your email delete such mails with x-headers spam classification or
whatever.

I've just had another look at it in response to your post, and there's one
thing it lacks which mailwasher has, and that's the one press blacklisting.

I find spam comes from so many sources that in m/w all I have to do is
highlight it, press -(minus) and it's blacklisted and that source is in
future premarked for deletion; it's an essential feature.

I couldn't find a way to configure a hotkey to do this either, but I expect
they will add it, and then I expect to change.

I've just downloaded Frontgate, which I too have never heard of - will
report back

No hot-key for it yet, but you simply highlight the message, right-
click, and choose "lists" and then "add to blacklist." Beyond that,
unlike Mailwasher, it's not crippleware :)

No quite Aaron, FGMX will download a part of it, decide on it and then
take the proper action based upon it...

Steve... I did announce the first non-beta on December 14 here and in
ACFD, guess you weren't around then :)
