It looks like WMCD tries to phone home when ever
you click on any of its parts.

I used to work at a big corporation with an even bigger phone bill.
They even bought software to keep track of who was using their own
extensions to make long distance calls, and how much.

Eventually they figured out that it was the coke machine. It had its
own phone line, or share one, and would call the guy who stocked it
whenever it was getting low on cups, or syrup, or whatever (or maybe
it was a coffee machine.)

But it was broken and it would call 24 hours a day, everyday, calling
again as soon as it was disconnected.

The coke distributor was just in the next county but it was long
distance.

It's not that he didn't know, it wasn't his job (concern). :)

Well, maybe. But maybe it just called his company's computer and
reported Low. Or one or more of Low on cups, Low on coffee, Low on
sugar, Low on cream powder.

And there was no evidence that it had called many times. only the
machine number and one or more checks in boxes marked Low, and the
earliest date for each check mark. And maybe another set of check
boxes for empty, with a date for each check mark. After all, if
they don't anticipate a broken machine, why do they need to notify him
of more than one report of being Low or more than one report of
Empty..
