what's gone wrong?

Looking for help with a strange network problem. I've had my home network
running fine for years with file sharing working perfectly. Lately my laptop
can no longer access the shared files on my desktop (is tol it does not have
permission) and even stranger when I try to look at the workgroup (named
'SLA') in network places under Microsoft Windows Networks from the desktop PC
itself, I receive the following error message "SLA is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The
list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

I've tried unsharing and resharing, re-running the network setup wizard,
renaming the network, but all to no avail.

Oddly, by TiVo can still access the shared music files on the network
through the TiVo desktop utility.

I'm stumped. I can't think of any changes I've made to any settings that
would have precipitated this.
Any help?

thanks
Spencer

sounds like computer browser issue. Can you ping each other? If yes, can you net view other computers, for example net view \\ip?

Thanks, Robert. I finally figured out the problem last night.
Somehow a firewall setting in MS-OneCare had been changed unbeknownst to me
which blocked file-sharing. So my laptop could see the share but not access
the files and my TiVo could continue to access because it had an explicit
exemption in the firewall's settings.
