What's an MVP ?

I've never used the web interface. Well, that's not quite true; I tried
it *once*. They'll have to pry KNode out of my cold, dead fingers
before I'd use the web interface again. :)

Even Outlook Express is superior to the web interface. ;-}

I made a general a sarcastic remark that I believe is acurate for many of
the MVPS out there.

You are the one who decided to launch a personal attack against me.

First I'm selfish. When you see I actually do have a clue and have helped
many people on this board then I'm just jealouse.

Mike, one of us DOES look like a jackass. I'll let you and anyone else
reading this string of flames decide for themselves.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who do understand binary
and those who don't.

An MVP gets this kind of message for every 20 or so posts.

thanks a ton...solved it in 2 seconds!

In general someone who has taken tests to prove his/her knowledge to become
an MVP, and volunteers his/her time to do just that. Many have been
corrupted by the political education of the process in that free speech
against an MS product is not permitted. Some just find weblinks, some are
highly experienced and don't do that as often.

Check my posting history, you will sometimes find that I am posting via
Knode (often run from a virtual pc installation of mandrake or fedora).

Malke uses KNode.
I have tried PAN, not bad, but OE is the best for text based newsgroups IMO.

I just wondered, I often flip between the two platforms when reading
news, but I have found it's easier to not read the same groups between
different readers - it's a pain to try and keep the read/unread in sync
between them :)

I use Super Gravity for Usenet, find that there is nothing better on the
market - just wish they ported it to Linux. Super Gravity is free and
does suffer from any of the issues that OE does.

There are two flaws in what you say..

1.. We don't take tests..
2.. We are not obliged to think that all MS products are great.. the fact
that we freely help in MS newsgroups shows an eagerness to help others with
MS products, and we do this BEFORE being invited to become MVPs..

I'm in completely agreement with you on Super Gravity. Gravity is what I
used on Windows years and years ago. I wish it were ported over here,
too. What I don't like about KNode is that the scoring system sucks. I
loved Gravity's Bozo filter. One of the things I do like about KNode is
that I can quickly go from one newsserver to another. I read groups
hosted on 5 different newsservers and I found Pan clumsy in that
regard. I've tried other newsreaders (slrn, gnews, etc.) but come back
to KNode for its ease of use. Since I have cable, it doesn't bother me
that KNode is an online reader.

If you code, maybe you could get together with the guy who has taken
over Gravity and port it? That would be great!

What is a MVP ?

To me they, for the most part, a group of people who have helped me, if I
give them all the info they need, with very good answers to my questions. And
I thankful they are here because they have bailed me out countless time.

And many of us often recommend specific non-Microsoft products in preference
to Microsoft ones.

I code, but I like to think that I've graduated to actually Programming
now that I'm wise enough to know the difference :)

I would love to have the time to get back into OS, but with running a
business I barely get time to do Usenet (I normally have two or three
systems on my desk and sneak a Usenet session in a couple minutes a
day).

I found PAN to be a PITA also. I've not tried KNode, I'll have to take a
look at it.

Have not some MVPs been known to use non-Microsoft newsreaders?

I am with you there Ron.

There can be a lot of detail and provisos to remember to include. It's much
simpler and safer to paste, read and modify than to reinvent the wheel every
time you post.

Nobody tells us that we can't.. I use Outlook Express because I have it and
it is easy to use.. I have used it ever since it appeared..

We are here to help people through problems encountered in MS software is
all.. if we want to do it from a computer running Linux or Mac OS, that is
our prerogative.. that many of us don't is just one of those things.. :)
