What's all the hubbub...on the hub, Bub?!

Ever since I successfully connected my two computers to a router and then to
the internet so it's a nice little mini home network I have flashing lights
all the time. Yet the "other" machine isn't in use. I have firewalls on
both, and on one both the Windows firewall and a software firewall from
F-Secure (rebranded as my ISP's). How can I determine what all this activity
is? And whether it's potential malicious?

Hi
If it is Cable Internet service, and the light that flashes all the time is
the Internet traffic light it might be Normal.
Download and run this from utility from Microsoft it will tell you if there
is Traffic on and out the computer it self. and what generated it.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Networking/TcpView.mspx
BTW Running two software Firewall done not add security and might eventually
trash the TCP?IP Stack.
I would suggest that you get a Cable/DSL Router even if you have only one
computer. These devices are so inexpensive (some are $10 on sale) that there
is NO reason to forgo the security that they provide.

Thanks for your advice. I have a router. That's what's made all the traffic
apparent to me.
