What sort of Ram in PenitumI 166MMX motherbord?

P

Pascal

Hello,

Big question:
I've got a pc Pentium 1 MMX 166Mhz.
On the motherboard there are 4 EDO ram slots and 2 SDRam slots.
I want to get as much memory as possible.
When I put a new 256 MB SDRAM in it (PC133), the Bios and Win XP only sees
64Mb
When I put a 64Mb SDRAM in it (PC100), the Bios and Win XP only sees 16Mb.
So, only one fourth of the mem chips.

I wondered why?
What sort of SDRam should I get (I guess older types) to perform best with
this sort of motherboard?
I could place 2 SDram modules of 256, so I would have 128Mb ram total.
Would this be the best solution?
The type of motherboard is unknown (I don't find any name on it).

Can I combine SDRam with the old EDO ram, or is it better to leave the EDO
slots empty? (I did try this, and it worked, both were seen, but after a
while, I got a mem conflict once (given by WinXP).

I have put in a fast 6GB harddisk, and XP works fine, but it writes to much
to the Harddisk, with only 64Mb of Ram, so at least I would like to get
128Mb.
What would be the result of a 128Mb module? (I don't have one now to test)

Enyone has experiance with this matter?
All comments are welcome!

greatings,
Pascal.

I believe that it is past time for a newer machine!!
I can't believe that XP even run on this?

I don't know the make and model names (clone pc!).
I can (will) put in two new SDRam modules. I will search that websites!
thanks.

It runs very well on it!

The most important thing on a (older) PC is 'fast harddisk' and 'enough
memory' !!

Really!

Since you are an expert, you should know about AIDA32 and
the Bel Arc Advisor, so you should know all about the
hardware on your old clone.

So, all experts (witch I'm not) know everything?
But thanks anyway, I will try that Bel Arc Advisor.
My parents will be glad if the "old pc" works fine.
Why should we put all old pc's in the junk container? If someone's happy
with the thing?

No, you cannot combine SIMMS (EDO, FPM) and DIMMS (SDRAM) in the same
system. You must use either one or the other. Also being so old it probably
only accept a certain size of DIMM, so if you try to add one that is too
large it will not be fully recognized. I'm sure it certainly will not use
256MB DIMMS, or even 128. It probably can only use single sided 16 or maybe
32mb modules.

I do not believe this system is capable enough of running XP anyway. I'm
surprised you were able to get it installed and running at all. Good luck
with it anyway though.

Like I said, a new 256Mb module is seen as 64Mb. (not bad at all)
This week, I will do the test with 2X256Mb.
I'm just a bit afraid of the voltage differences between the new motherbords
and the older (5V - 3V). I hope I won't break anything.

You will fry the RAM if the mobo can not adjust the voltage.

Sounds a lot like you need to get the mobo manual for your
particular make/model and see what you can do. If you don't
know the make/model, get AIDA32 or the Bel Arc Advisor,
either of these programs will scan your computer and report
on the hardware. You can then go to the proper website and
download the manuals.

Apparently you can see the motherboard. Get the exact make
and model and go to their web page support and download the
manual for the mother board. It will give you the accurate specs
without a lot of guessing that you are getting.
