Poking around my new computer I came across a directory
called c:/I386 - out of curiosity I opened it - it's 870
MB's in size, contains about 1700 files! Does anybody know
what these files are? Many thanks!

It is the major contents of a Windows XP CD ROM.
It is probably there to allow you to add components without the need for a
copy of Windows XP on CD

These are the install files for Windows XP. If you got a Windows-CD
and the same files are on the CD you can safely delete the folder. For
some OEM versions this is not true and you have to keep the files on
the HDD for tzhe case that you have to reinstall Windows.
