What ist the maximum length of a global group?
What ist the maximum length of a local group?
What ist the maximum length of a user name ( and logon name)?
Which characters are allowed ??

Groups were limited to (about) 5000 members in Win2000.

I have heard this limit is relaxed in (some modes of) Win2003.

What ist the maximum length of a user name ( and logon name)?

Why don't you just try it?

But whatever the limit, restict yourself to 14 characters to prevent
issues with "NetBIOS" names which max out at 16 characters and
which are created for each user, machine, or domain by adding
a character or two, to the actual name.

Which characters are allowed ??

Use only Alpha for the first character, and alphanumeric for the
following characters -- limit yourself to 14 max.

This is more restrictive than the "real rules" but you will be happy
if you restricter yourself thusly.

You could just go and try it. I did. The maximum length for usernames
seems to be 20, for group names 256.

Same for permitted characters in names: just try it.Windows will tell
you that \/"[]:|<>+=;,?*@ are not permitted, and that names may not
consist entirely of periods and/or spaces.

So why couldn't you try that?

It was probably homework -- part of my reason for giving
him the "good answer" rather than the "technically correct one."
