What is the difference between Canon BCI-3 and BCI-6 colour cartridges?

What is the difference between Canon BCI-3 and BCI-6 colour cartridges?
They look exactly the same to me, except the labels. Are the inks
different?

I have a few unused BCI-3s left from my old printer, but my new one
specifies BCI-6s.

Usew what Canon recommends. In the IP4/5000 the BCI3eBK is a black
pigmented ink. The BCI6-bk/m/c/y are dye formulations. You really
cannot tell the chemical formulations by looking at the ink.

They may look black to the untrained-eyed Measekite (who also suffers
from poor eyesight). But put both cartridges up to a strong light and
you can tell the chemical formulation of each in a matter of seconds.
The BCI-3e black is pigmented ink and gives no transparency at all while
the BCI-6 black is dye ink (more transparent) and shows up a dark
reddish purple in the corners of the cartridge where there is less ink
to see through. There, you have just told the chemical formulation of
each whether they're in a bottle, cartridge or syringe.

I have read that there is a slight difference in ink formulation.
You may get a color shift. Also, hope the ink isn't way past its
expiry date . . .

How about the #8 cartridges used in some of the other Canon models? I
understand they are dye formulas but I don't know about the black. They
hold 13 ml of ink.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with "#8" cartridges so I won't hazard a guess.

The black in a BCI-8 cartridge is a photo black and is dye based. BCI-3ebk
is the only pigmented black used in the Pixma series of printers.

THEN TELL ME ALL OF THE CHEMICALS AND THE PERCENTAGES IN EACH. THE OEMS
HAVE INTELLIGENT ENGINEERS TRYING MANY MANY COMBINATIONS OF CHEMICALS IN
DIFFERING PERCENTAGES BUT YOU ARE SO SMART THAT YOU CAN JUST PUT THEM UP
TO A STRONG LIGHT AND TELL. HA HA HA HA WHAT A JOKE
HA HA HA A JOKE FROM ACCROSS THE ATLANTIC HA HA HA

Thank you Taliesyn and Edwin for your prompt replies (I didn't see the
original Measekite's message - because of language he usually uses I had to
filter his messages out).

I am interested only in colour cartridges, both printers use the same
BCI-3BK
I agree that you cannot "see" chemical composition of the ink (you may be
able to distinguish different inks, but not confirm if they are identical),
that is why I asked the question. I heard (without guarantee) that yellow
and cyan inks, hence the cartridges are identical for BCI-3 and BCI-6
series, but that magenta is different. I checked and it actually looks
slightly different too. I don't expect Canon to make such information
public, but I guess the guys who sell compatible inks/cartridges probably
know the answer to my question. If so, I would appreciate the info.

Thanks again,

Tomek

Don't be an ass. I can tell the chemical formulation of each if they're
dye or pigmented just by looking at them in the light.

THAT IS CORRECT. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION ARE THE FORMULA AND YOU CANNOT
SEE IT.

NO THEY DON'T. COMPATIBLE IS JUST A WORD. THAT MEANS VERY LITTLE MORE
THAN THE WORD "LIKE"
If so, I would appreciate the info.

The tanks are the same. The ink is what is supposedly different.

I had a i850 whose printhead died and I replaced it with an IP5000.
850 uses BCI3 5000 uses BCI6. I printed color calibration
charts on the IP5000 with the BCI6 original cartridges and
with refilled BCI3 cartridges left over from the i850. If you
look real close you can see a slight difference in a few of the
colors. I printed a few 8.5 x 11 photos using the two different
inks and can not tell the difference. Small differences can usually
be calibrated out with different profiles.

The refill ink I use is Ink Specialists from MIS. MIS specifies
the same ink for both the BCI3 and BCI6 cartridges. I suspect
you can use the cartridges and see no more difference than
between different lots of the same numbered cartridges.

THAT MEANS YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE USING. THEY DO NOT
DISCLOSE THAT ON THEIR WEBSITE AND THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU IF YOU CALL
THEM. ALL YOU KNOW IS YOU BOUGHT IT FROM THEM AND THEY STUCK THEIR
MARKETING LABEL ON THE STUFF. IF YOU DISAGREE THEN PROVE IT. CUT AND
PASTE WHAT THEY ARE SELLING YOU FROM THEIR WEBSITE. I DEFY YOU.

If you want to buy Image Specalists inks... these are two places I know
for *a fact* sell it. There are other places too, smaller webbies that
also sell it. But to meet the strict measekite's requirement of it
being posted on a website... I limit my self to those two.

I used Canon inks from the store. Their website doesn't tell me who makes
their ink. They won't tell me if I call them. They stuck their label on the
cartridges. All I know is that I bought it from them! I agree! OEM is no
good too! You made your own point! Hahahaha!

I see you are plugged today. Your caps lock is still stuck.

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU HAVE SUCH A LOW IQ. WERE YOU BORN DUMB OR
DID YOU HAVE TO WORK AT IT. YOU JUST PROVED THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT
YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. EVEN A CHILD KNOWS THAT CANON DESIGNED THEIR
PRINTER AND FORMULATED THE INK TO GO WITH IT. I JUST FIND IT DIFFICULT
TO RESPOND TO YOUR STUPIDITY. PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER MY POSTS AGAN.
