Essentially, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) allows central
management and configuration of IP address and other TCP/IP settings
(gateway, DNS, WINS, etc.). With 200x based DHCP servers, they can also be
integrated with Win 200x based DNS Servers e.g. auto update of DNS records
for clients.

DNS (Domain Naming System) is a name resolution system. Typically a user is
better at remembering www.microsoft.com rather than 207.46.144.188 (one of
many MS public IP).

More info follows; do let us know if this helps to start you off. Thanks!

The following is old, and so does include APIPA but
I wrote it to answer the basic question you are asking:

http://www.learnquick.com/tcpdnsdhcpbody.html

APIPA is just an automatic way a client who cannot
obtain a DHCP assigned address can create it's own
address, useable only locally since there is no default
gateway nor DNS server.

APIPA was basically invented to make TCP/IP as easy
to use as the (obsolete) NetBEUI.

And remember: NetBIOS is NOT NetBEUI.

Even Win2003 networks/domains (even in Native mode)
almost always need NetBIOS.
