What is an Index.htm?

Is Index.htm an actual web page to be viewed on the web site? Or something
else? When I created one following the Help instructions, it told me how to
create a web site, then instructed me to open Index.htm in my browser
(though I can't imagine why) then it instructed me to type up the page
however I wanted it and save it. I don't think one can type such a page in
IE 6.0, then save it in FP 2002. Though I may have misunderstood. When I
open Index.htm in FP 2002, it's a blank page. If I open the Task Pane to
apply a Page Template to Index.htm, FP 2002 creates a new page; it doesn't
apply the template to the open Index.htm.

I would very much appreciate some clarification on the use of Index.htm;
what it is, if it's actually a web page to be viewed on a web site, how I
can apply a page template to it, etc.

The index page (default page) is the opening page of any web site. Some
webs use index.htm, some use default.htm, etc., depending on the
requirements of the host server.

When you type in the domain name, it's what opens first.

You have to put in content via FrontPage.

How, then, can I use the Task Pane to select a Page Template without FP 2002
automatically starting another new page which is not Index.htm?

Design your page using the template and then choose >File
Save As and then name it Index.htm
