WHAT IS "%1 IS NOT A VALID WIN32 APPLICATION"

Up until a couple of days ago all was fine. Now when I try to open an excel
or word attachement I get this message:

%1 is not a valid win32 application

what can be causing this and how do I fix it.

Do they open when you save them to disk first?
