what files are not neccessary to backup on 2000 server?

I have 4 MM tape drive, backing up to tape every night 20g uncompressed or
40 gig compressed on our win 2000 file server.

I am hitting a wall now, we are at 33 gig, and at 31 it asks for another
tape.

I have been backing up the whole server, everything.

Are there files or directories that I do not need to backup?

What is the common operating procedure for backing up a 2000 server,
everything, or just user files and system state data?

Well, you can eliminate the swap file, anything under temp, and
probably stuff like *.tmp, but I'd look to see if you have any giant
files you don't care about or can archive first.

I use Ghost, and typically just get larger hard drives for the image
server when things get too big...

Think about your backup strategy. In addition to the
other suggestions made think about this: What would you
have to do to replace a system in the event of a
catastrophic failure? That would mean acquiring a new
piece of hardware, and restoring the system, right?
WRONG! You don't need to back up the WINNT directory,
nor the folder holding your backup application. WHY?
Because you are going to have to Install this clean
before you can even access your backup tape! So skip
those directories also. Make sure you back up your
system state, but skip windows and backup exec(if that's
what you're using) cuz you're gonna have to scratch
install them anyway.
