What file controls which profile to use when loggin in?

I was doing some housekeeping on my WIN2K box, and removed
a file that seemed to control which profile to use when
logging into a box.
My box uses a NT domain and uses cached profiles. So when
I am off the domain, I can still use my domain user name
to login to my box.
So now, I have username.domain (created after I deleted
the file) and still <domain_username>. What tells Win2k to
use <domain_username> upon login?
