when i switch on my pc a window pops up saying:
'"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size
of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory
requests for some applications may be denied. For more information,
see help""
can someone explain what does it mean

Your pagefile is too small. Set it to "system managed size" to eliminate
the usual cause of this message.
To make this change, you must use an account which is a member of the
administrators group.
Proceed as follows:
Open the control panel
Click the icon labeled "system"
Click the tab labeled "advanced"
Click the button labeled "settings" in the Performance area
Click the tab labeled "advanced"
Click the tab labeled "settings" in the Virtual Memory area
Here is where an account which is a member of the administrators group can
enabled "System Managed Size"
A normal user can get to this location but cannot make a change.

What Jim said.

If you're still seeing the 'low on virtual memory' message at startup
after setting your pagefile to System Managed Size that means your RAM
is insufficient for the applications that are starting with Windows.

Solutions:
1- Eliminate some of the applications that start with Windows.
2- Buy more RAM.

A tip: Infected software (virus, trojan, spyware, etc.) can suck up a
great deal of memory.
