What did I buy?

Marsha

Thought I was buying "Windows Microsoft XP Professional
New Fully Sealed Unopened Retail". Received only a CD
which is marked NOT FOR RETAIL OR OEM DISTRIBUTION and
UNLICENSED SOFTWARE - illegal without separate license
from Microsoft - Version 2002

Label on Jacket has the following information:
Window XP Professional English Disk Kit CD
MFG REFERENCE: AVTO 09-09-03
PART NUMBER: E85-00289
MEDIA SET: X08-26129

What did I buy? or should I contact the seller and
complain?

All help greatly appreciated.......
Thanks,
Marsha

You bought a CD that was intended for mass installation on
mass produced computers. As it says, it requires purchase
of a license (COA-certificate of authenticity) and product
key.

If the ad you bought this from said "retail" you have the
right to return it for a full refund or replacement with a
proper retail CD.

Marsha, contact (e-mail address removed) and they should be able to tell you if
this version is legitimate. The seller should have also provided you with a
Product Key and Certificate of Authenticity - did they?

Did you get a key with it ?? If you did and you install
it and it works, whats the problem ?? If you did not get
a key then you have a issue.

The part number she quoted (PART NUMBER: E85-00289) appears to be a valid
microsoft part number for a "Media only" product _without_ a licence - a bit
like a backup or replacement CD.

Epinions.com describes it as:

"Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Media Only (E85-00289) For PC"

I think the part she really needs is:

"Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Full Version (E85-00086) For PC"

or possibly the upgrade version if she already has a qualifying OS

"Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Upgrade (E85-00087) For PC"

The problem is that the seller more than likely is trying to trick people
into thinking that they are buying a product with a valid key which would
allow them to install and use the software. And the problem is with this
form of media, there is NO key provided. This means the buyer now has to go
out and purchase a license only or a full retail copy, meaning spending more
money than they should have.

Actually it looks like they are selling a legit MS product complete with a
Microsoft part number (E85-00289).

Greetings --

You purchased the installation CD that goes with a Volume License.
If you didn't also purchase said Volume License (for a minimum of 5
PCs), you've got nothing but a very expensive and non-absorbent
coaster. Contact the vendor.

You bought a CD that is distributed for use with volume licenses in
businesses, where they may buy 100 or 1000 licenses, and want to be able
to have a convenient number of CDs to use with them. It cannot be used
legally without such a license in support, - and any Key you get to use
with it is pirated.

I suggest informing
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.asp

with all details
