What could cause sudden loss of all audio and Error Code 39

Suddenly the sound doesn’t work on my ThinkPad and I’ve tried uninstalling
all of the sound drivers and rebooting and letting the plug and play
reinstall all of them. I also then ran a SoundMax driver update for my R51
ThinkPad from the Lenovo web site:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/lga241ww.txt but it
won't even open.

I continue to get the same error message for all of the sound-related
drivers. It references Error code 39 and says it is unable to load the
drivers and they may be corrupt. I do still get a default beep out of the
speakers and it is the same irregardless of the intended Wav file. Could it
be that an automatic upgrade by Windows has caused this issue. I think it is
a software issue because I still get the generic beep.

"File not Found". With the .txt extension, I doubt it'll work as a
driver or update anyway.

The beep is from a small speaker on the MB, not from the installed
speakers and sound card. It could be a bad sound card, or drivers
problem. One other thought.. if your installed a wireless card, it
could cause a conflict. There won't necessarily be an error icon in
Device Manager either. Remove any new device, reboot and see if that
cure it.

The drivers, text and license don't seem to be available anymore. You
need to contact Lenovo and see if they can send you the files.

Their forums may offer a solution:

Nope, but a Google search seems to have found them:

Elmo: Thanks for your help. For the benefit of others, I was able to
resolve my issue. I'm not sure if the drivers came from the site you pointed
me to or another official Lenovo site becasue I tried to download from both
and things whirled and twirled but there were no prompts, etc. after the
downloads. But, when I rebooted the computer for an unrelated reason,
SoundMAX drivers loaded and - voila - my sound was working again. I think
this happened because I had earlier uninstalled the existing SoundMAX drivers
that Error Code 39 said couldn't be loaded.

Thanks again,
Happ Wallace

OK, that's good to know. Glad you got it sorted..
