What causes mice to freeze?

A few weeks ago my wireless mouse died. Changed the battery, didn't help. I
presumed it was the mouse, so I plugged in my old MS mouse. It actually worked
for about a second, than it too froze in the spot. I tried all sorts of things,
checked the device manager, etc. Never occurred to me to try a reboot.
Eventually, out of desperation, I did and problem fixed.

It happened again! This time I did reboot immediately and it fixed the problem
again. What would cause this to happen?

Most often, this is caused by a collision between the mouse, and some other
pointing device, like a mouse pad, or pen. If you have these devices, remove
them and the mouse from device manager, and restart to refind them, and
hopefully straighten out the collision.

Sorry to have taken this long to answer, I've been away. I don't have any other
pointing device connected at all.
