What applications are accessing the internet?

When I am not directly downloading or otherwise using the internet I can see
that my internet meter in the notification area of the taskbar contiuues to
show high levels of internet activity. Is there some way I can determine
which applications are accessing the internet on my pc? I would like better
control than I have presently over bandwidth.

You may have programs (Windows Update, AntiVirus, etc.) running
in the background that are checking for updates and such.

You could also possibly have a malware type that is phoning home.
You may want to run a virus and malware scan to make sure this
isn't what's going on.

This freeware program (Active Wall Traffic Monitor 2) might help:

Hi

Another free program is 'active ports' at

Otherwise, ask your firewall to notify you if a program tries to access the
NET and eventually, you should be able to find the guilty program.

Finally, your computer may be a zoombie (used by a third party without your
knowledge) in which case you'll have to find the malware/trojan and
eradicate it
