What a mess - Vista Explorer!

I've used every iteration of Windows to date yet I'm still confused by the
arcane and unhelpful terminology used. Take Folder Options for example.
There are three buttons:

Apply to Folders - which folders?
Reset Folders - which folders, and rest it them to what?
Restore Defaults - which folders?

And then there's "Previews and Filters" and "Classic View?" - Huh, what
does that mean to anyone?

So say I want Details View right through the system, except in say
Videos,Music and Pictures, how would I do it?

And why can't I resize the columns with my mouse?

Etc, et-f-cetera...

Still, I'm not expecting a fix. Not when XP still breaks trying to get media
info from AVI files.

The descriptions for these options are all there in the help and support
component. Click Start/Help and Support. In the Search Box, type 'folder
options' and click the search icon.

Click the 'Change folder views and behavior' link.

Vista has a brand new help and support component.

There are answers to all of the questions that you asked about on that help
page?

Example, 2 of your questions were:
Apply to Folders - which folders?
Reset Folders - which folders, and rest it them to what?

In the first section of that help page:

To Do this:
Apply the current view settings (such as List, Details, or Large Icons) to
all of the folders on your computer of this same type, such as the
Documents, Pictures, or Music folders.

Do This:
Click the View tab, and then click Apply to Folders. (To switch these
folders back to their default settings, click Reset Folders.)

There is no "set all of my folders to exactly the way I personally like to
view them, automatically" button. You need to learn how to use the available
options.

Ronnie, I have done this at least 10 times this year, but Vista keeps
changing the settings back to Artist, Genre, etc. on me. I want it changed
permanently. Does each Windows Vista update change the settings back? Do
the settings change back if an MP3 or other audio file gets copied to the
folder? It must be something like that because my settings do not stay. Any
ideas?
