If a previous, partial post shows up, my apologies; I was typing
with my palms again!
I'll try again; besides, I think I'll state it clearer this time
<g>, given a second chance.
System File Checker, winXP Pro, SP2+HFix, P4, 512 Meg, dual 80
Gig + 160Gig external drives, many peripherals, fully updated os,
adware, av, spyware, cookie management, etc etc., zero problems,
all runs fine.
Reason for question is I ran SFC in order to be sure I was
telling someone else with a trashed machine how to do it.
However, I got a surprise on my machine
:
-- SFC asks for the CD after running a second or two, saying it
needs some missing files. Hmm, OK, guess that's possible, maybe,
sort of. Then something occurred to me:
-- Will SFC distinguish between -newer- and -older- files when
it looks on the CD?
-- I'm concerned it may back-rev files on me. I stopped SFC
at that point becaue I didn't want to find out empiracally <g>.
-- Can anyone tell me with any degree of confidence that it won't
back-rev files on me?
-- Will it complain if it finds MS files but not those from the
CD on it? I have added a couple of .DLLs myself.
I know, I could back up dllcache and try it, but that's a lot of
files to have to mess with and I'd rather not disturb a well
functioning system. Doing a REstore from a full backup is also a
distasteful job so I don't want to chance that either. I can't
find anything specific on SFC's operation and methodology.
-- Any good sites on SFC?
