Newegg had the Athlon 64 3800+ Venice for $150.00. I was gona
wait 2 more weeks to see if would it go down a little more, and today,
they are gone. Now the 3800+ Venice are going for $289.00 at other
retailers.
I found someone on eBay selling 2 of them for $152.00 + $14.00
S&H a piece. His rating is great, so I decided to get one. He claims
they are brandnew in box with HSF, so I hope I'm not making a mistake.
I hate dealing on eBay since it's like buying second hand at a garage
sale.

If you are after AMD, I suggest you wait for AM2 which supports DDR2.

??? How hard did you look? Are you sure you aren't looking at
Manchester prices?

I always go to www.motherboards.org and use their search facility to
check prices.

I wasn't. I'm on SSI, and it took me months to save up what I
have. That's why I bought the $152.00 one off eBay. I've been building
this system since June 2005. I now have everything except the
videocard. I'm gona try for a 7600GT (another 2, or 3 months), unless
something more powerful comes along for less money.
The mainboard is a Biostar NF4UL-A9. It has the XGP slot so
you can use an AGP card with the Nforce4 Ultra chipset. Unfortunatly,
it dosen't work with all AGP cards, and the cards it does, take a
performance hit. Untill I can get the 7600GT, I'll have to either use
my current 6600GT, or my standby GF4 Ti4400. If neither of them work,
then I'll just have to sit the machine aside longer till I get the
7600GT.

I already bought the S939 mainboard, and 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR.
It's been almost a year since I bought them. Can't return them. I'd be
wasting over $300.00 scraping them, and since I don't have a credit,
or debit account, I can't sell on eBay, so I'd never be able to sale
them. By the time I save for another mainboard, and memory purchase,
DDR3, and AMD's next socket version will be out, and you'll be
suggesting the same thing.

I used pricewatch, and froogle. One place (at the time) on
pricewatch had it for $152.00, but it's ratings where atrocious. Now I
just checked again, and see some more retaillers have it for around
the price I just paid, but they are not to reputable (However since
I'm chancing eBay). One list it on pricewatch as a S939 chip, then
when you go to the website, it's actually a S754 chip.

Nah. I buy processors through Ebay. Check the person's ratings and if they
are near 100% you are fine. Most people are honest. The few scumbags there
are make the most noise, but they are not typical

The seller's rating is 99.99% with only 21 overall negative
out of 15921 sales. Only 4 of them where in the last 12 months, and
he's been a member since 2000, so he seems legit. I'm mostly worried
if the CPU is defective. His ad doesn't say anything about returns.
Only that the CPU has a warrenty through AMD. I'm wondering if AMD
would honor it being I purchased it through eBay?

I just decided to check back at Newegg, and the 3800+ Venice
is back on their list... at $147.50 now. :( I don't if I should shoot
someone at newegg, or myself. I awas have luck like this.

I used the search facility at motherboards.org and got a quote from
mwave.com, which I consider to be a good vendor based on my own
experience.

But, it doesn't matter. You paid in the ballpark, and if you paid a
tad high, it's because ebay is a better quality choice rather than
lesser, because of the disciplined feedback mechanism. I have a
feeling you will like the CPU and I'll bet your current video card
will be good enough, too. I just don't think there is much software
that needs "Skybuck's dream machine." I spent just under $800 on
components for a new system in Feb., which includes monitor and OS,
and it's just sooooo nice, despite relatively humble specs. Based on
what I read here, I think the most important thing is to choose
components that work well together, rather than the absolute beefiest
specs you can afford.

1. If it's DOA, the guy will give you your money back. He cares
about his rating more than your $152.

2. If the guy won't give you your money back, AMD will replace the
CPU.

3. Ignore (1) and (2) because the CPU will be fine.

Sleep tight!

And check out the negative rating's comments. Most of the time the
complaints are lame. People who would make a problem out of anything.
If the seller runs a store through Ebay then the sale is not much different
than buying from Newegg. You will get an bill on letterhead and that's all
you need for RMA replacement. And defective processors are extremely rare
(what Charlie said).

Oh well. I already sent my payment off, so (crossing fingers).

good luck, ebay can be a crap shoot. but i have been lucky so far and not
received a dud. i even found a deal on a quad processor rs/6000 machine out
there and it works like a champ! an antique by todays standards, but the
thing just sits there and runs without any problems.
