Welcome screen appears but with no account

Hello. I have an old DELL computer that runs Windows XP Pro. I had just
installed McAfee Virusscan Enterprise 8.5i and scheduled an anti-virus can at
the next startup. I was in the process of scanning the entire system when it
had detected some malware. It couldn't delete it; it turns out that the .dll
was still being used by another parent application, svchost.exe and
iexplore.exe. When I tried to end it, I accidently ended 2 of three
svchost.exe processes when a service error popped up and told me that a
service had stopped running and my computer would restart in 30 seconds.
However, when it did restart, the welcome screen would appear, but with no
account! I can't even log in! But I do know that my files are still there,
because I set my system to preview my desktop picture BEFORE the welcome
screen, and it's still there. Any suggestions?

P.S. Some more background info-I also installed a GUI changing application
that transformed my Win XP into a Vista look. The welcome screen I get from
this GUI doesn't have a verbose, so the text that displays when reqular XP
screens start (i.e. Please wait...) doesn't show up.

run system restore from the xp cd.. if you want to back anything up
first then you should still be able to get in from safemode (hit f8
during startup).

Flamer.

There is no system restore from the XP CD.

What is the history of this system? Was it run with no AV program? Did you
suspect a virus infection? Why was it you were just installing and running
an AV program?

Can it boot into Safe Mode? Restart the computer, as the BIOS splash screen
disappears repeatedly tap the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu
appears. Select Safe Mode and press enter. Can you login to an account
that way? If not try Safe Mode with networking. Does that work?

The system is an old DELL C600 that runs WIN XP PRO SP2. I DID suspect a
trojan horse - I had an old version of Enterprise that detected it, and
deleted it. However, it must of executed before it could be prevented,
because everytime the computer would start up, somewhere in about 5-10
minutes of being on it, a pop-up would say "No connection to the internet is
available. To view information that has been saved to your computer click
"work offline"." That was my first clue. Then, last night, because I had
nothing else to do, I installed the latest verison of Enterprise, updated it,
then ran a system check. The rest I wrote about. The other problems I have is
that the BIOS doesn't detect my CD/DVD +/- Combo RAM drive on start-up, it
says "Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found", even though it would start up
with the BIOS and you can hear it running the CD. I installed Vista
Transformation Pack 6.0. A full spec list is below:

DELL c600 Latitude
20 GB Hitachi HD
256 MB RAM
Pentium III Processor
24x DVD/CD +/- RW COMBO Drive
ATI M3 Mobility Video Card (8 MB cache)
(YEAH IT SUCKS< I KNOW)

I forgot to mention that when I boot into SAFE MODE I still have the same
problem. And Last Known Good Configuration is the same.

Can you try Ctrl+Alt+Del combination twice at the welcome screen to
get into classic logon mode?
If yes then you can enter the user name and password there.
If I remember correctly the safe mode is by default in classic logon
mode. Do you see the welcome screen instead there?

No, even when I go into Safe Mode it still is the same, no account or
anything. However, when I do press CTRL+ALT+DEL the system processes
something, then stops

Ok so at this point the system could still be infected, so take care of that
first. Here is a link with info on cleaning malware.

You could also post to one of these newsgroups that are specific to virus

So that means the system is still infected as Rock suggested.
One thing that you can try is boot in safe mode with command prompt.
This time there will be no welcome screen. You can try to enter the
system this way.
Then use the command line virus check in your AV software. (McAfee if
I remember).
I don't know the way to update the virus database in command mode.
Somebody can help you in this newsgroup or the newsgroup suggested by
Rock.
