Weird audio problem

In a nutshell: My system sounds don't play. System Beeps come through fine.
Media player will play the .wav system sounds and other audio/video. Embedded
video will not play (ex youtube). In sounds and audio devices, the "play"
button to preview the selected sys sound is grayed out.

I recently installed both the WMP 11 beta and Office 2007 beta, but don't
recall if the sounds were playing before that or how long after they stopped.
I have uninstalled the WMP beta (not o2k7) but still no luck. It is now
re-installed. Drivers/bios are both up to date as far as I can tell.

There have been no other system changes.

This is driving me crazy!

I recently had an audio problem also ---

I found out my problem was -----------

Somehow (no idea how) the Midi Music Playback Default Device was switched to
MPU-401 from Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth (check Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties/Audio tab/Midi Music Playback).

However, the Volume tab still read "No device" and was grayed out so I still
couldn't get the "Place volume icon in the task bar" to work. So, under the
Audio tab, I chose "VIA AC '97 Enhanced Audio (wave)" instead of "Modem #2
line playback" and voila -- all is now back to normal (the way it was)! No
idea what caused those settings to change!?

For all the conversations and suggestions, see:
Subject: No more midi Sounds & Audio

Thanks for the reply...

Issue #1: I don't see VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio as an option

Issue #2: Can't find Modem #2 line playback

I'll check the post you refer to. Any other thoughts?

Any other thoughts?<

Yes -- today I lost ALL my sound, not just midi, AND I had lost all my
options!!

So, after going to Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I clicked on
Troubleshoot and wound up going to Windows updates. I did the update,
rebooted, and got everything back! I really don't know why I've had to do
this, but anyway now everything is working!
