Weird Alert

A

Axel

I occasional hear the sound of a usb device being disconnected, then
re-connected. As there is no "visual" alert, therefore I have no idea
which "device" is having problems. This only thing installed here is
high-speed sat. for the internet, and occaionally upon reboot, I recieve the
message "device not attached to High speed USB device" or something similar.
Is there a way to find out what is causing problems. These are all USB 2.0
ports (I believe - it's a brand new machine). Oh yes, there is a multi-card
reader which is never used - you know one of those goofy litte things that
accepts about 3-4 different cards. Finally, the "safely remove hardware"
icon is always visible in the tray.
Any suggestions.... TIA - Axel

Hi, Axel.

your having the "Safely remove hardware" should be present in the system
tray because a USB device was recognized. Upon system bootup and hardware
configuration change (on a hot bus such as the USB-- universal serial bus),
the device tree is rebuilt. Since you probably do not have media in the
goofy little multi-card reader, you can probably rule that out. It's
possible you have a loose cable connection for the USB. If you're not
having issues (such as lost connectivity) and the occassional noise doesn't
drive your bonkers, you can probably safely ignore it.

On the other hand, you might want to ensure you have the latest drivers for
not only your USB, but your USB devices. It's the drivers that will
effectively allow the device(s) to communicate with the computer.
