WebSearch toolbar doesn't die!

A few weeks ago I did probably the stupidest thing in my life... I got
conned into installing the stupid "Smiley Central" toolbar (aka
WebSearch toolbar). In order to remove it, I tried the following:

- look for anything in Add/Remove to remove it (nothing there)
- Ran SpyBot
- Ran AdAware 6.0

Nothing worked, my stupid bar is still there, both in IE and OE. It's
actually disabled right now (i.e., buttons grayed out) and cannot be
used after running the spyware removal tools, but still cannot be
removed!

I have two questions:
1) Can I remove IE (and OE) altogether ? If so would that fix the
problem ?
2) Is there anything else or other spyware removal tools that can be
tried ?

Thanks!

you can download a program that's called "jv 16 power
tools", this is a simple registry editor. with this
program you can delete all registry and startup entries
of the webbar!
I don't know the website to download it from right now
but when you search for it you will find it.
the software itself is a 30day trial and then you have to
pay $30 for a license, but it helped me a lot till now
and i think it's worth the money.
good luck

Thanks for the tip, but that also did not work. The good I just
took matters into my own hands and fixed it myself! Here's what worked
for me.

--> IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT HOW THE REGISTRY WORKS, DO NOT TRY THIS
AT HOME :) or at least back it up before digging in. <--

1) Close all instances of Explorer, MSN Messegner, and Outlook Express
2) In the registry look for "websearch" and delete every main key
found
3) doublecheck with MSConfig, that nothing funny is scheduled to run
at startup
4) reboot
5) delete MyWebSearch folder in Program Files
6) send email to (e-mail address removed) to thank them for the huge
waste of time

Hey,

I had a similar situation.
Try this:
1] Look thru the program files folder for a folder
with the appropriate date for the download of
the search bar.
2] *VERIFY* that it's the correct folder by looking
for a familiar name.
3] Delete the folder.
4] Then... Use the "systems internals" scan to see
if spybot s&d finds the loose registry entry, and delete it.

If spybot *finds* the entry and can't delete it,
try running spybot from system startup by
changing the setting in the settings panel,
spybot may offer to do that for you.

If that doesn't get rid of the bar... oh oh...

I can unequivocally state that it can be easily fixed by doing this! There is
no need to go to those lengths.
Run this: http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
Sit back and relax.
