In Win XP | MS Paint, I click on File | From Scanner or Camera, and the
video of my laptop's built-in webcam appears within Paint. I can do similar
trick in Word | Insert | From Scanner or Camera.

But, in Win 7, I cannot do this. In Paint, the From Scanner or Camera is
greyed out. In Word, there is an error: "Unable to connect to scanner or
camera. Check the connection and reinstall driver if necessary."

Please help me fix this.

Thanks
Steve

Click the start menu, then type in the search box scanners and cameras.
Click on the 'View scanners and cameras' result that appears and see
if your device is listed there.

It worked under Windows XP. Okay, that's the topic of this newsgroup.
Thanks for sharing that diary entry although it is worthless to anyone
else since you never mentioned WHICH camera you use or how it's
connected.

For Windows 7, guess you'll actually have to install the camera's driver
to define it as an imaging device so the OS knows what to do with it.

Y ? Because I'm using Outlook Express to post this message.

When I'm at Newsgroup Subscriptions window, I cannot find any newsgroup for
Windows 7.

Running Win7 P x6x. I have a logitech webcam pro9000. It is listed in the
device manager, works well with skype but my paint program also has it
greyed out. Drivers are up to date, Scanned the w7 groups, unless I missed
it, no questions there yet.

When I do View Scanner and Cameras, there is no device listed.

I'd like to also mention...This is a brand-new HP laptop with built-in
webcam and running on Windows 7. I installed Skype, and it works fine with
the webcam. There is also webcam software (Webcam Companion 3) that came
with the laptop, and it works fine with the webcam.

So, I don't think the issue is about driver or device not being added;
rather, changes or restrictions between Win XP and Win 7.

Thanks
Steve
