Web Server Error w/VB.NET 2003

I cannot access previously created VB.NET projects on the web server. I have used the server for months now, and I don't know of any configurations that have changed. I can create a new project on the server, but when I try and open any project (older or just created), I get the following error: "The Web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web project located at the following URL: <URL> The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.

The IIS service is running, as I can navigate to the web site. I have tried restarting the IIS server and rebooted both machines, to no avail. Any ideas where else to look for this one

The setup
VB.NET 2003 MDE 2003 Version 7.1.3088 w/.NET Framework 1.1 Version 1.1.4322 running on a 2.4G Pentium w/1MB RAM and Windows XP Pro version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
Connected via Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G) and SpeedStream Broadband (AllTel
Server: Windows Server 2003 Build 3790, IIS Version 6.
