Web Part Connections (how do I hide columns?)

I was watching this WSS video (
http://www.sharepointcustomization....Customization of SharePoint Sites/default.htm
) and the author had three web parts - a contact list, document list, and an
image web part. He said the image web part was connecting the image from the
contact list.

I have been able to do the same thing but not without having the image
column also appear in my contact list on the main page. Is there a way to
hide the column in this view yet still have the field available for other web
parts to connect to? I have another web part that grabs info from the
contact list using an email address field. Is there a way to hide the email
address column in my document list as well?

Or did the author do this some other way?

If the source web part is a Data View Web part then it doesn't need to
include in its view the fields to be used in the connection.

Some of the demos on my site show this.
