Hi all I need a real big help in solving a serious XP problem for a oldish
Toshiba Satellite P4 Laptop.
I recently installed USB drivers for my Fuji Fine Pix 2600 camera which
works flawless and decided to try out the Web Cam feature on this thing.
Now the laptop has crashed and I have no sound no DVD-ROM and a internal
modem that wont connect online.
Looking at device manager i have yellow markers over the DVD-ROM the
Yamaha sound device and something called the "Plug and Play Software
Device Enumerator". All ( Code 39 ) device not properly installed files
missing or corrupted.
Anyway this is what happened:
After selecting Cam mode on my fuji a message "USB Web CAM" device found
appeared and XP prompted me to install the drivers. I was given two
options I can't remember which one I selected I think the left option
(recommended setup) it then said this is an unsigned driver and not tested
by Microsoft Windows will create backup files in case of the need for a
system restore. I went ahead with the installation and it copied several
files and then things went pear-shaped from that point on.
I can't remember what exactly happened it went very fast but I was trying
to get Yahoo messenger to open the Web Cam and it was refusing then I
turned away for one sec and what flashed in front of my eyes for a brief
moment looked like the notorious NT4 blue screen of death (something I see
a lot on my retarded office equipment at work). The laptop rebooted
and chkdsk kicked to my horror as it had found 3 or 4 crosslinked
files and files with invalid details (file size truncated or something)
"windows has fixed the files by copying them to a different location".
The files in question didn't seem to be of any importance. I logged in and
got a system message box "Windows had detected a serious crash do u want
to send this info to Microsoft" huh u don't say Machine seemed
to be fine well USB drivers still worked for picture downloads but I
later found out the DVD sound and modem have stopped working.
I tried to connect to the net but XP just gives an error message "Port is
in use by another program" hmm strange. I went into control panel and ran
a diagnostic on the modem seem to be responding but it wouldn't dial out.
I'm scratching my head here was it the installation of the web cam drivers
that screwed up the laptop or was something to do with the fatal crash.
I tried to uninstall the Web Cam drivers but for some reason it wasn't
listed in "Add/Remove"
I remembered about the system restore and after spending more hours
farting around the help file I managed to run the backup utility. I
selected the date that was before I installed any of the USB drivers and
ran the system back up. Windows rebooted and say "Sorry we cannot perform
a system restore" I was really f****d off how can Windows say that when it
promised to create a restore entry point.
I'm very familiar with 95/98 but not with XP this OS was all pre-installed
so I really dunno what to do exactly to fix it (a harddrive format is not
an option i wanna take)
How do I remove the yellow markers off the devices ??
Can I just simply delete or uninstall the affected hardware and let
windows re-detect and install the drivers ??
should I perform this in safe mode or normal ??
Also what exactly is the function of the "Plug and Play Software Device
Enumerator" could this explain why the modem is failing to connect ??
Help would be most appreciated.
