Web Browser Built In to Outlook 2002?

O

Outlook 2002 User

Is this really the same browser as the separate IE browser that comes
with XP SP2? It doesn't appear to be the same browser because popups
are not blocked when I go through the browser in Outlook and I also get
frequent script error messages when I view certain websites through
Outlook's browser. If I use IE6, the script errors do not appear.

How can I prevent the error in Outlook's web browser:

An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Syntax error
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

The internet explorer script debugging options in IE6 do nothing with
the browser embedded in Outlook.

If it is the same browser, then why aren't popups blocked when the
browser is used through Outlook?

Try loading http://www.kcra.com using the browser in Outlook 2002 and
see what happens. It works fine for me when I use IE6 standalone. I
tried it one other peoples XP Professional workstations with XP SP2 and
they had the same errors.

By the way, it is not ONLY that website, I'm just using that link as an
example.

Check the security zone being used by Outlook. Is Outlook configured to
use the Restricted Sites security zone? Did you check that the
Restricted Sites security zone is set to its High level? When using the
Restricted Sites security zone and set to High, scripts won't run, fonts
won't download, ActiveX won't download nor run, and just about every
HTML nasty is blocked. The exception is web bugs (linked images that go
back to a server to retrieve them which can be used by spammers to track
which e-mail accounts are valid and actively monitored).

None of the security zones prevent linked images so none will block web
bugs. I believe OL2003 has an option to block linked images until you
decide to view them, and Outlook Express 6 (after applying Windows XP
Service Pack 2) has the option, but OL2002 doesn't have this option.
You can use anti-spam products, like SpamPal with its HTML-Modify
plug-in to block linked images to avoid web bugs. Or you could
configure Outlook to NOT use the Preview Pane (for the Inbox) and
instead use its AutoPreview mode which shows the first few lines of each
message in plain-text format.
