could not install this update. event log talks about something called
"SideBySide"
could not be opened and dependent Assembly MicroSoft. VC80. CRT could not
be found. The reference assembly is not installed on your system.

I have been using WD sence early March. This is the fist time this happened.

Exactly the same problem here but with version 1.1.1408.8.
Microsoft.VC80.CRT.dll is an assembly that I believe comes with Visual
Studio 2005, which I don't have installed on this computer. On another
computer latest definitions installed just fine. I do have Visual
Studio 2005 installed on that other pc. This seems like a broken
dependency introduced in the latest update.

I am having the same problems on two systems. I do not have any Symantec
products on my systems. I check the Symantec site you referred and I do not
have any of the Programs loaded on my system that they reference (sbss.exe).

I seemed to have resolved the problem by running MS Update, unselect the
Update to Defender, install all the other updates, reboot the system and then
manually install the Defender update.

Updating or Re-Installing is a good workaround while we investigate this.
