I using XP Pro. I've been using a WD My Book Essential Edition drive for 6-7
months no problem. When I went to use the computer this afternoon the drive
was no longer recognized. I've unplugged, rebooted and all combinations
thereof to no avail. XP recognizes that a USB device has been connected, but
not what kind. Does anyone have any advice????

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried that. Windows only recognizes a USB
device. It doesn't seem to know what kind of device. So in device mnger it
shows a question mark under OTHER DEVICES subbed as a USB device. The USB
icon in the tray (that displays in the lower right hand corner) doesn't
appear when the drive is plugged in. The drive seems to have pwr (light
comes on). I don't really hear anything to tell if it is responding and I
don't know if the light has ever indicated any action (it is not placed in
the immediate view area).

I've tried a data recovery software that does not see the drive.

I've tried connecting the drive to another computer with the same results.
The computer recognizes a USB device; not what kind.

Does the drive show up in Disk Management?
