WD License Fiasco

Like many of you, I too have fallen foul of the issues surrounding the
expiry of my license for Windows Defender Beta. I'm running Windows XP 2,
and in my case, my PC hung just after booting and displayed a message box
that indicated a HD problem (delayed write failure). I presume that this
was in fact due to the fact that the WD Service was unavailable (license
expired), because after disabling the WD program using MSCONFIG, the problem
went away. If so, then this is a very poor design "feature" that would
really get in the way if you ever need to recover your system from a backup
copy that included an out of date WD. Just what you don't need in those
circumstances. Any product that hooks into the system at this level should
attempt to keep running no matter what. It is not acceptable to disable a
system just because the license has expired - block functionality, perhaps,
but do not cause major headaches for your customers.

I'd rather run without protection that use a product with this flaw.

As Windows Defender is no longer beta, why not just download the latest
version from the MS Download Site.
