New defs are now available

I don't understand why people write messages in this newsgroup every time
the new Windows Defender's definitions are released... Why you don't keep
"on" the Windows's Automatic Updates??? Windows Defender is automatically
updated via Windows Automatic Updates, so you haven't to worry about when and
how it's updated.

...except when it does not.

I have my Automatic Updates 'on' and the blasted automatic updates have
not happened... yet.

that is one reason why,
not everyone gets them at the same time so it is nice when someone announces
it.
It also keeps WD on its toes just in case you do not get the Windows Update
for some reason.

Because you don't want every updates to be installed. For example,
people hate WGA on their system for whatever reasons so if you are on
automatic updates, you will get it whether you want it or not.

I have setup as download all updates for me but let me choose when to
install. Now I can select which ones to install and which ones to
ignore.

I agree, there are lots of irrelevant stuff here but these NGs aren't so
busy anyway!!

Hope this helps.

Then you should be asking yourself (or perhaps us as well) why.

Are you on a home network, or a corporate or institutional lan?

Thank you for completing my thought. Yes, I prefer to see these alerts
here, as they tell me what I may be missing.

PS. I have now finally managed to (manually) force the latest
definitions to arrive.

Say more? You went to Windows Update and were offered the updates?

Does Auto-update work at all?

If you are in a corporate environment where the source of updates is
controlled by management, they must choose whether or not to distribute
Windows Defender definitions.

Hi Bill

No I'm not in a corporate environment. I'm using a home network, cable
connection. No, Windows Update only offered me an update to IE7 (which
apparently I cannot hide away any more.)

So, I re-downloaded the WindowsDefender.msi, and re-installed it. WD
went and updated itself from Definition 1.0.0.0 to the most recent one.

I hope it was worth it....:)

I won't know until next update...
