way to mark deleted items as read automatically?

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to automatically mark deleted items as "read" when you delete
them out of your inbox? What I mean is, when messages show up in my inbox,
sometimes I don't open them, I just delete them right to my trash. Yet the
trash shows tons of unread messages...... I hate preview pane, so I dont
want to use that.

I thought there was an option to "automatically mark items as read when
sending to trash" or something like that. Is it buried somewhere I cant find
it, help!

Thanks to all in advance.

Thanks Diane. So what youre saying is that unread messages are maked as read
automatically when I move them to my deleted items folder? I have a lot of
blue numbers in blue parentheses next to my deletes items. I assume this
means I have "unread messages" in my deleted items.

I just tested this, it appears that unread messages are being automatically
marked as read when I delete them before reading/opening them. How is that
doing that automatically then? I'm confused.

No. I'm saying there is no rule to mark them read. They aren't marked as
read when you delete them - send yourself some mail with read receipts and
delete them while marked unread, then empty deleted items. The numbers go
down as the items are deleted, unread.

sent several to myself, even from another work account, with and without read
receipts. They all mark themselves read when I delete them without opeining
them.

I first completely emptied the deleted items folder. I sent about 5 or 6
emails to myself (with and without receipts). deleted them one by one to the
trash without opening them. The trash for a split second showed a blue 1
then disappeared as I deleted each one. I checked the trash and theyre all
in there, not bolded at all, as if they were read. weird..........

something else is going on - they should be in the same read state as they
were when you deleted them. Did you get deleted unread or read receipts
back?

ok, here's what I get with ANY message I get, read receipt on or off, I get
the same phenomenon for receipts as well, ANY email to my inbox:

[With preview pane set to ON, at bottom]
- messages are BOLD on receipt to my inbox
- when I highlight (not open) message, while it remains BOLD, delete using
the X in my toolbar --> message moves to Deleted Items folder, little blue
(1) pops up above Deleted Items folder then immediately disappears
- when U click on the Deleted Items folder, message is no longer BOLD (as if
read)

[With preview pane set to OFF]
- messages are BOLD on receipt to my inbox
- when I highlight (not open) message, while it remains BOLD, delete using
the X in my toolbar --> message moves to Deleted Items folder, little blue
(1) pops up and REMAINS (as if unread message in Deleted Items folder)
- clicking on Deleted Items Folder, message still in BOLD, little blue (1)
still there
- clicking back to my inbox (never opening message), blue (1) disappears
above Deleted Items
- click back to Deleted Items to check, message is NOT bold (as if were read)

The ONLY 2 things I have checked in Options>Other>Reading Pane are:
Mark Item as read when selection changes
AND
Single key reading using spacebar

Weird huh? Have I discovered a bug?

If I uncheck "Mark Item as read when selection changes" in

Blue (1) persists, and messages stay bold.

That's what that little checkmark does! I always wondered what that meant.
I guess it means when you click on any other folder, your messages get marked

if the preview pane is on and if the setting is mark when selection changes,
it's going to be marked read when the selection changes during the delete.

If you never look in the deleted folder, are they marked as read?

It has nothing to do with folders - it has everything to do with the
selected message - if it is shown in the preview pane. It only applies if
the reading (or preview pane is enabled).

they
were when you deleted them. Did you get deleted unread or read receipts
back?

sent several to myself, even from another work account, with and
without
read
receipts. They all mark themselves read when I delete them without
opeining
them.

I first completely emptied the deleted items folder. I sent about 5
or 6
emails to myself (with and without receipts). deleted them one by
one to
the
trash without opening them. The trash for a split second showed a
blue 1
then disappeared as I deleted each one. I checked the trash and
theyre
all
in there, not bolded at all, as if they were read. weird..........

:

No. I'm saying there is no rule to mark them read. They aren't
marked as
read when you delete them - send yourself some mail with read
receipts
and
delete them while marked unread, then empty deleted items. The
numbers go
down as the items are deleted, unread.

Thanks Diane. So what youre saying is that unread messages are
maked
as
read
automatically when I move them to my deleted items folder? I have
a
lot
of
blue numbers in blue parentheses next to my deletes items. I
assume
this
means I have "unread messages" in my deleted items.

I just tested this, it appears that unread messages are being
automatically
marked as read when I delete them before reading/opening them.
How is
that
doing that automatically then? I'm confused.

:

there is no such rule.

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to automatically mark deleted items as "read"
when
you
delete
them out of your inbox? What I mean is, when messages show up
in my
inbox,
sometimes I don't open them, I just delete them right to my
trash.
Yet
the
trash shows tons of unread messages...... I hate preview pane,
so I
dont
want to use that.

I thought there was an option to "automatically mark items as
read
when
sending to trash" or something like that. Is it buried
somewhere I
cant
find
it, help!

Thanks to all in advance.

my preview pane was off, I was playing around with it I guess, not knowing it
actually had something to do, with the combination of that option.

I was getting a mixed bag of results in the deleted items and could never
figure out how it used to be set up, cos I remember being able to delete
without reading & having it marked read.

Glad I figured it out.

BTW - your original message indicated this wasn't happening and you wished
it did -

Now you're saying it works the way you would like it to?

ok, here's what I get with ANY message I get, read receipt on or off, I
get
the same phenomenon for receipts as well, ANY email to my inbox:

[With preview pane set to ON, at bottom]
- messages are BOLD on receipt to my inbox
- when I highlight (not open) message, while it remains BOLD, delete using
the X in my toolbar --> message moves to Deleted Items folder, little
blue
(1) pops up above Deleted Items folder then immediately disappears
- when U click on the Deleted Items folder, message is no longer BOLD (as
if
read)

[With preview pane set to OFF]
- messages are BOLD on receipt to my inbox
- when I highlight (not open) message, while it remains BOLD, delete using
the X in my toolbar --> message moves to Deleted Items folder, little
blue
(1) pops up and REMAINS (as if unread message in Deleted Items folder)
- clicking on Deleted Items Folder, message still in BOLD, little blue (1)
still there
- clicking back to my inbox (never opening message), blue (1) disappears
above Deleted Items
- click back to Deleted Items to check, message is NOT bold (as if were
read)

The ONLY 2 things I have checked in Options>Other>Reading Pane are:
Mark Item as read when selection changes
AND
Single key reading using spacebar

Weird huh? Have I discovered a bug?
