watermarking images on downloan only

I am updating my wife's website, she is a visual artist, and would like to
add some limited protection for her images. I understand that it is
virtually impossible to create true image protection, but we will do the best
we can. What we would like to accomplish is for the images to be "clear"
when viewed on the site, but if right clicked or saved, a watermark with her
name and copyright symbol would come up on the image. She said she has seen
this on other sites (not sure where) but doesn't want her images stamped all
over when people are just looking at the site. Any suggestions? I have
looked at most of the posts regarding this issue, but haven't seen anything
that addresses specifically this need. Thanks, Mark

If an unmarked image is placed on the web, it is downloaded when anyone
views it.
The right-click scripts you have seen may be blocked in IE7 and FireFox,
but they will simply unhide an absolutely positioned layer with the
watermark information that covers the image - they do not affect the
image already in the browser cache. Turn off javascript and see if it
still works.

It is not only virtually impossible to protect images on the web - it is
totally impossible.

Thanks for the reply. I understand from the many posts that the turn off
right click isn't much of an option. I am not sure what you mean by turning
off the javascript, relates to the image paths? Is there a way to make an
overlay with watermark that would serve as a "screen" on top of any of the
images that wouldn't show in the site? Sounds like no is the answer. The
only other option based upon the many posts here is to make the images so low
res and small that they degrade when anyone tries to scale them larger. That
doesn't work if you need to present a larger, clearer image. Also, Digimarc
is the other option, but seems like money down the drain if you are not
mostly interested in selling your own images, which my wife is not. Thanks
for your time and thoughts. Mark

This will not prevent the determined or knowledgeable from getting your images
- but for casual browsers make the real images cell backgrounds (size the cell same as image) and in the cell place a transparent
gif of same size

"Turn off javascript" does not affect the image paths - it affects the
"watermark" the sites place over the image when you right click on them
- the watermarks will either not appear at all, or will *always* be
present, depending on how the script is written. The watermarks do not
affect the image in any way, which can be found in the browser cache.

The only effective watermark is one placed on the image in a image
editing program. As I have said the image can be retrieved from the
browser cache, without any watermark at all unless that watermark is
part of the image.

Digimark digitally watermarks images, the mark does not show. However,
the mark will *never* show, but can be searched for on other web sites.
