warnings and errors in even viewer

Sandy J

My PC details:
Computer: Dell Dimension 8250
OS: WindowsXP Professional
Service Pack 3
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.53GHz, 1.50 GB of Ram
I have 111 GB of Disc Memory of which approx 75% free space
A 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Destop USB device with approx 78% free
space
Recently installed items:
Xtasy Radeon 9550 128MB DDR AG P Graphics Card installed a few days
ago to replace my old one that had died.
McAfee Security Center (replaced Avast-free version) installed last
week when Avast detected a trojan but was unable to deal with it.

Recently Deleted Items(via control panel>add/remove programs) Avast! free
version

I have a lot of errors and warnings in the event viewer and I'm not sure how
serious they are or what to do about them, Clicking on the link for more
information doesn't give me a clue how to fix them. I'm not very computer
savvy so any help would be appreciated.

The warnings and errors are:

1. The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load
(note: According to a Google search the first file might be left
from Avast! so I suspect the rest might be as well)
Aavmker4
aswSP
asw T di
Beep

2. The windows Media Player Network Sharing Service depends on the
Universal Plug and Play Device Host service which failed to start
because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

3. The Avast! Standard Shield Support service failed to start due to the
following error:
The system cannot find the specified file
(note: I had Avast, free version installed but uninstalled it and
replaced it with McAfee security center)

4. the aswFsBlk service failed to start due to the following error:
the system cannot find the specified file. (Google search finds that
this file is related to Avast antiviral software.)

5. CRT invalid display type.

6. An error was detected on device\Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging
operation (Note: there are many of these warnings)

7. DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has to enabled devices associated with it.
"attempting to start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order
to run the server {204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56)

Is there somewhere I can find out how to fix all this? Avast! was
removed via the add/remove program but it seems to have bits left floating
around.
Can these errors and warnings be safely ignored?

Thanks for your attention.

The only one that seems like you should likely be concerned with it is
(IMHO):

6. An error was detected on device\Device\Harddisk1\D during a
paging operation (Note: there are many of these warnings)

My suggestion:
First (most important) backup to external media ASAP.
Second - figure out what make of hard drive you have and visit that
manufacturer's web site. Obtain and run their drive diagnostic test (full
diagnostics) to ensure your hard disk drive is not going bad. Do this for
every hard disk drive in your system.

Many of the others concern you disabling a service for the easiest/fastest
fix.

You should concentrate on errors from the last boot. You would do better
to copy error reports and not paraphrase.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Use Autoruns to remove unwanted Avast start up items.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is
to use Autoruns.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gerry,
I didn't know how to copy that text, now I do thanks to you... I'll give
the other suggestion a go and see if that helps!
