Warning re Norton System works

I have Norton System Works 2005. When MSAS was installed
there were several areas that were not working including
system explorer and event logs. To test to see if the real
time checkers were working, I installed a google toolbar in
IE. This should have created a pop up warning and asking
permission to install. I did not receive such.

I do not think the MSAS real time tools are working even
though they show as being active.

I have uninstalled MSAS until this matter is resolved. If
you are having problems with some of the features of MSAS,
and you have Norton System works, you should test the software.

Thanks for the warning--although, of course, appcompat might be a more
appropriate group.

We have a number of posts from NSW 2005 users with similar information, as
well as a (small) number of posts from folks running NSW 2005 who state that
they have absolutely no problems.

I believe your course of action is appropriate--and hope to hear back after
another beta build is released about whether this issue has gone away.

Why on earth are you using SystemWorks in the first place? AVG
antivirus from Grisoft.com has a free program that has more frequent
updates, uses fewer system resources and is kinder to WinXP; personally
i prefer their paid version, which is $33. There is nothing in
SystemWorks that can't be obtained for the remaining $36, or for free.
GoBack is useless, the 'Utilities' aren't very utilitarian, and Norton
bogs the system down during scan so badly that it is almost unusable.
Trash the Norton and get AVG, you'll never regret it; i know, is used
Norton for years, 'til someone recommended Grisoft.

Thanks for your suggestion, however, uninstalling NSW
2005 to make a beta MSAS work is not an acceptable
solution. MSAS needs to work with NSW 2005 given the
wide use of the product. If certain features will not
work, ie. real time tools, then the program needs to warn
the user of such, since the user assumes they are
protected when they are not.

Oddly enough, I have encountered this problem on one of
my three computers. The other two computers are running
NSW plus MSAS without any problems or missing system
explorers... but this computer that I'm using now does
have that issue.

Of course, I believe this is the only computer using NSW
2005, so perhaps that's the issue.

Please do eventually let me know, Bill, what you suggest
doing.

Thanks!

If an update via control pane, add or remove, microsoft antispyware, change,
update
or
an uninstall and reinstall--preferably with any active monitoring by NSW
2005 turned off doesn't work. I would recommend uninstalling the beta
Microsoft Antispyware and re-testing upon release of a subsequent build or
the final product.

There are a few posts from folks who say that Microsoft Antispyware is
working fine with NSW 2005, but I haven't been able to spot a
differentiating factor. I'd be willing to test this myself, but Symantec
doesn't make a trial of this product available, so I'll leave that testing
to the pros at Microsoft.
