Want help uncluttering file manager directory tree.

Dr. DOS

I erroneously posted this to the Vista NG. I am reposting
here, to the XP NG.

In Windows explorer(file manager)left pane (the directory
tree) All I want is....
for the left pane/window to show the contents of the
C:\drive and what hangs below it, such as the existence of
all the subdirectories and D;\, e;\ etc.
I do not want to see the useless "My Documents," "printers,"
"unused desktop shortcuts," etc. and the rest of these
irrelevant sub-directories (folders). I do want to
immediately see when I invoke the file manager the main
sub-directories including "program files," "windows," and
all other c:\etc.
Additionally, when I expand my network connections, there
are a myriad of listings/paths. These are historical since
most of the time, the other computers are off line. I want
Windows to stop building up this list. I am quite content to
use (Lan)\entire network\MS Windows Network. How do I get XP
Pro SP3 to give me what I want in file manager? Thank you.

Hi Dr. DOS,

Two paned view without the other shortcuts? Hard to do unless you use a
free replacement like Powerdesk. I've used the paid version since
Explorer no longer offered a way to view more than one drive at a time.
But the free version won't give you the extra junk.

Single paned shortcut:
%windir%\explorer.exe /n

opens the C: showing all the subfolders. Of course if you click the
folders button, you get the same tree you get now.

%windir%\explorer.exe /n,/root,D:\
does the same for D:\

Regarding Network Connections- my show all only lists the ways to
connect to a network. Network Places will show shared folders, but my
experience is if you remove them at least once (maybe twice), they won't
come back. Like shared printers, once they're removed Windows doesn't
keep bringing back what you've deleted.

Thanks for the help.
I thought there was a setting in the registry or a tweak
that stopped the network neighborhood from gathering and
cluttering up. I occasionally delete the clutter, but it
eventually builds up again.

If either of the wexplorer command line switches work, I'll
modify my taskbar icon.

I'll checkout Powerdesk.

Terry,
I installed the free version of Powerdesk V6. It
accomplishes exactly what I want, plus even more. Powerdesk,
so far, is the answer to my request.
Thanks very much for the lead.

Hi Doc,

Glad you like it. I love it. MS actually made Explorer worse in Win95
than it used to be in 3.xx. But Powerdesk gave us back that
functionality. Others do also, but I'm not one to try everything out
once I find one that does what I need. And the free version works for
just about everything.

You may want to see if the paid version offers anything you may use, as
it's pretty reasonable also.

Take care,
