Wake on lan - VIA Rhine II

Hi everyone,

I've got Windows XP Pro and an ABIT VA-20 motherbord with an integrated

VIA Rhine II NIC, and I'm having trouble getting Wake on Lan to work.

If I boot the machine into DOS, and then shut it down again, Wake on
Lan works - I can start the machine by sending a magic packet (I use
Depicus Wake On Lan). This always works.

However, if I boot into Windows XP and shutdown, the machine does not
respond to the magic packet. I can see the NIC is enabled as the lights

are flashing, but the machine does not start.

I've tried all combinations of the settings "Allow the computer to turn

off this device to save power", "Allow the computer to bring the
computer out of standby", and "Only allow management stations to bring
the computer out of standby" to no avail. I've also installed the
latest version of the VIA driver (seems to be 3.54.0.439) and tried
setting Wake Up Type to all four settings (magic packet, OS Controlled,

pattern matching and ALL). Hasn't made any difference, I still can't
get it to wake up if the machine was shutdown by XP.

Am I missing something? Is there some registry setting that might fix
this?

Thanks!

It seems that this happens when XP does not shut off correctly.
You may think it is, but I suspect it is crashing while it is shutting down.
The driver has nothing to do with it, since the driver works only when
windows is operational (Of course!). Nor do those settings you say here
play a role.
[[[Allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power", "Allow the computer to bring the
computer out of standby", and "Only allow management stations to bring
the computer out of standby"]]]]]

Some computer have a setting in the power settings inside control panel that
turn on and off power managment.. see if changing that setting plays a role.
I am talking about this tab (it may not be available, since it is dependant
on the motherboard) http://www.farstone.com/home/ensite/pic/VC002.jpg

tell me if this helps

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately that tab you referred to is not
present (I remember it used to be present on my old PC, I guess that
one used to use APM instead of ACPI).

The crashing during shutdown seems possible. I haven't noticed anything
unusual when I shut it down, seems to work ok. Have had a look at the
System and Application logs but can't see anything obvious in there
(might be crashing after the event log has been stopped...)

Any advice on how I might be able to tell if it is crashing? Is there a
shutdown log somewhere?

cheers,

Hajo

you can try looking in the administrator tools (in control panel) > event
viewer... but I dont think you will see something there...

try logging off so you are at the welcome screen and then shutting down from
the shut down link on the
lower left ....

what setting do you have under Control panel> system> advanced [tab]> start
up and recovery settings [button]> system failure? Do you have it as
automatically restart? If so, try unchecking it...

I am at loss of what to say... tell me if any of this helps....

Might want to check the BIOS for power settings. I believe that Wake-up on
LAN has to activated in the BIOS. I am at work so I cannot check my system. I
also have a Rhine II. I did not update to the newest drivers because of
problems with it and XP. If the update was via WinXP Automatic Updates, you
may be able to remove the update. Go to Add/Remove, check the Show Updates,
and see if it is present. If not you may be able to insert you mobo drivers
disk and revert to the earlier drivers.

Hope this helps!
