W2k to XP User Name - Please Help

S

Samantha Davis

This is my first time using this newsgroup. Do you guys
know each other? Why would I be accused of being a dizzy
blond when I've seen other people do the same thing? I'm
sure I'm close, maybe a dash is really an underscore or
something. Bottom line is I can't log on my laptop that
has W2K pro. I forgot my user name but I still remember
my password. I've seen others at work that have done this
and they do something during boot up that gives them
access to the files and then find enough of their user
name so that they can go back and log on. I tried to load
XP over my W2K but it just loaded XP on the side and
didn't give me access to any of my files or applications.
I'm not going to anyone again with this. If I have to
I'll wipe it clean and start over. Is there anyone out
there that can help, Please?

Does XP let you see Documents and Settings? You should be able to see
folders just inside Documents and Settings, whose names correspond to
account names. So, if you logged in as S_Davis, you will see a folder with
this name. Now, something else you would likely see is both an administrator
and an administrator.computername folder. This is part of how Windows
differentiates between an account for the local administrator versus a
domain administrator. In this case, you probably do not need to worry too
much about that. Also note that these folders will have a modification date
in Explorer. This * might * help you match profile names with when you used
them, if you did something to change the contents on that date.

Another option is to log on as administrator. You will have to have whatever
you chose for the administrator password. This should definitely let you see
inside Documents and Settings, or to use the Computer Management tool in
Adminstrative tools to look at user accounts.

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer.
