W2K SP4 causes STOP 0x00000050

Have tried to install SP4 for W2000 on two machines which
were previously at SP2.

One one it goes fine, no problems
On the second, a Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop, after reboot
it gives a BSOD with a STOP 0x00000050 in ntoskrnl.exe

Any ideas?

I read somewhere the Norton AV might cause this but even
disabling auto-protect it still gives the STOP.

I can boot to Safe mode and remove the SP but I want to
install it so I can install Visual Studio .NET which says
it needs SP4.

A stop 50 is a very generic stop error that can have many causes. The
fact that you can boot to safe mode shows that it is a service or
startup program. I suspect it is a 3rd party service.

I would boot into safe mode and copy MSConfig.exe from a Windows XP
system. Run MSConfig and disable everything. After verifing it works in
normal mode then you can enable items in groups to narrow down what is
causing the stop 50.
