W2k Harddisk-Data-Loss - probably 137Gb+ problem

Hello everybody

W2k seems not to be able to cope with large disks. Since I installed it on a 160GB-Disk, total breakdowns with complete data loss on the NTFS root partition occures irreproducable after a short time after installation. On a smaller disk (80GB) the same set of software worked fine for almost two years

Details
* I installed a W2k Prof. SP3 on a 80 GB Harddisk - This worked fine for almost two year
* I exchanged the disk by a 160GB one and copied the working system to that disk - This installation also worked fine for around two week
* Breakdown: Strange Bluescreen while copying some data. After that no more boot possible. A check from the w2k repair console showed that the partition has been destroyed (C:\ not found). Chkdsk repeaired something, so I was able to read c:\ again, but nearly 80% of my files did no longer contain their original content - seems like what you get when you mangle a FAT - but this was NTFS..
* Ok, might happen I tought, perhaps the change of the disk was a bad idea... - Complete new installation from scratc
* The new Installation worked some days, then Windows said while working fine: "C:\ not readable, run chkdsk" - No boot , nor partition.
* The suggested chkdsk found around 10% of the data of the disk and placed them in folders named dir.XXX
* I checked the harddisk for hardware errors (SMART, complete write/read-test) - nothin
* I bought a new Disk (also 160GB) - I installed W2k-SP3 once more on the new disk.
* I updated to SP
* The installation worked around one week - Breakdown - no more boo
* This time only part of the disk seems to be corrupt (\WINNT\SYSTEM32). Remaining parts seem to be still o
* Neither my virus scanner nor the personal firewall reported anything critical before those breakdowns. Also the computer sits behind an additional firewall which totally blocks any access from the Internet

Funny: A friend mine reported nearly the same problem (installed W2k 4 times) and then decided to give up and exchange his 160GB-Disk by two 80GB ones... ;-

Anyone any idea? I have not found any hint about this behaviour. The common shutdown problem metioned in some threads here seems not to be the case because my system always breaks down while running.

Thanks in advanc

Thoma

Additional Info:
- The first disk was a HITACHI HDS722516VLAT20 with 2MB cach
- The second (new) disk was a Seagate ST3160021A also with 2MB cach
- Mainboard is a Asus P4PE with an Intel 845PE Chipset. Onboard IDE is used
The Disk is always attached by UDMA 100 to the first IDE Channel, a slave was also present, but never made any problem
- Newest availlable drivers were installed for the chipset and all the othe component
