VueScan "Input|Lock image colors" option not found

L

Loic Le Guilly

Hi

I'm trying to scan a series of frames with the same settings.
As I understand it I need to use "Input|Lock image colors" option for that.
The problem is that I can't see this option anywhere. I can see "Lock
exposure" but not "Image colors"...

VueScan version 7.6.80 (demo)
Scanner Nikon LS 50 (or Coolscan V)
Win XP Pro

Thanks

Check 'lock exposure' and do another preview. After that, 'lock image
colors' should be visible.

It may or may not be available in the demo version - the demo does not have
all the features that the full "Professional" version has. Check the
website - the info may be there.

Preview once then lock exposure.

Preview a second time and you will get the lock image colour box. Adjust
colours to taste, then check the box to scan a series of images taken
under similar lighting.

Hi, Bruce --

Maybe you can help me with a Vuescan problem that is frustrating the
HELLLLLL out of me. It involves exactly these Vuescan options.
Several times I have manually corrected the color in the preview scans
on a strip of 4 color negatives. I follow the recipe to lock
exposure->preview->lock image color base -> lock image color. I then
refresh the display a couple of times to make sure that Vuescan has
"got it". Then I punch scan on the batch of 4 images and I'll be god
damned if I don't end up with a different color caste in the scanned
images than what I have in preview. I am completely baffled by what's
going on and don't know how to correct it - the scan literally has a
very different color caste than what I obtained in the preview. Any
idea what's going on? My only inkling of a possible explanation is
that regardless of the color settings Vuescan makes some kind of
coloring decision based on the first image and then propogates them
through the remainder of the scans (regardless of whether the first
image is scanned or not.)

Hi Bill

First a question.

Are you attempting to =individually= colour balance 4 negatives in the
strip and =then= batch scan?

If so, I believe you will be disappointed.

I understand the purpose of "lock image colour" is to carry one set of
colour balance settings over several images shot under similar light. So
you balance the first image of a sequence, then batch scan the series -
all with the same corrections.

You then apply final colour correction if needed in your image editor.

If I have misunderstood what you are trying to do, let me know.

PS - the individual crop settings are carried forward and I think it
would be useful if Vuescan remembered individual balance settings, but Ed
did not think so when I suggested it once before.

No, I was selecting an image (#3, say) from a set of four and color
correcting to that image. My intent was that these color settings
carry through for all the images.
I understand the purpose of "lock image colour" is to carry one set of
colour balance settings over several images shot under similar light. So

That is what I wanted to do. BUT -- and here is where I think Vuescan
is throwing me -- images #2-4 were inside shots. Image #1 was taken
outdoors at a balloon race: there are two balloons and lots of blue
sky. Despite color correcting to image #3 and doing ALL the workflow
lock-downs to get the color set, Vuescan REPEATEDLY scanned images 2-4
with a deep blue cast. The previews looked fine, yet the scans were
crap. And I couldn't get Vuescan to do anything else (after 3 or 4
tries) and I finally had to resort to "Auto levels" to get any kind of
reasonable scan.

It seemed that Vuescan didn't like all the blue sky in the negatives
and many of my scans of the balloon race were questionable. I had
hoped that by locking the image colors with an indoor color balance, I
could get correct scans of the balloon race - the balloons/sky image
#1 in the preview looked really good when I did this and that was the
scan I wanted --- and COULDN'T GET! (grrrrr! :)

You then apply final colour correction if needed in your image editor.

Yes, it would be nice to do this, but I haven't even been able to
figure out how to individual crop each image in a batch scan. I've
heard Vuescan can do this, but I haven't been able to do it. It looks
like whenever I change one crop box, they ALL change and that is the
scan crop I get. Can you help me with this one? :)
